Learn how to set up a Platelight acrylic panel on your desk for a clean, backlit display. Step-by-step guide with tips on mounting and cable management.

Quick answer

Place the Platelight on a stable desk surface near a power source, then attach the acrylic panel to the light base using the included mounting clips. Route the cable along the desk edge or under a monitor arm to keep it tidy.

Choosing the right spot on your desk

The Platelight works best when placed where it won't be blocked by monitors, speakers, or other gear. A corner or the back edge of the desk gives the light room to diffuse evenly across the acrylic panel. Avoid direct sunlight—it washes out the backlit effect and can make the panel look dull.

Understanding the acrylic panel and base

Each Platelight comes as two parts: the light base and a separate acrylic panel. The panel slides into or clips onto the base—depending on the model—so you can swap panels later without replacing the whole unit. The acrylic is durable but can scratch if you set it down on a rough surface, so keep the protective film on until you're ready to mount.

Step-by-step installation guide

  1. Unbox and inspect the components: Remove the Platelight base, acrylic panel, power cable, and any mounting clips from the box. Check that the acrylic panel has no cracks or deep scratches before you peel off the protective film. Keep the protective film on the acrylic until the final step to avoid fingerprints and dust during handling.
  2. Position the light base on your desk: Place the light base on your chosen spot. Make sure the USB or DC power cable can reach your computer or wall adapter without stretching. If the base has an adhesive pad, press it firmly onto a clean, dry surface. A common mistake is placing the base too close to the desk edge—leave at least 2 inches of clearance so the cable doesn't hang loose.
  3. Attach the acrylic panel to the base: Align the acrylic panel with the slot or clips on the light base. Gently push it in until it sits flush and doesn't wobble. Some panels require a slight angle to slide in—check the base's instruction diagram if it feels stuck. Do not force the panel. If it doesn't slide in easily, check that you're holding it the right way (artwork facing forward).
  4. Connect the power and test the light: Plug the power cable into the base and then into a USB port on your computer or a USB wall adapter. Turn on the light using the switch or button on the cable. If the light doesn't come on, check the cable connection and try a different USB port. Some USB ports on older monitors or hubs may not supply enough power—use a direct port on your PC or a 5V adapter for consistent brightness.
  5. Route and secure the cable: Tuck the cable along the back edge of your desk using adhesive cable clips or a cable raceway. If your desk has a grommet, feed the cable through it to keep the surface clean. Avoid running the cable under a heavy monitor stand where it could get pinched. Loose cables can get pulled accidentally, so use at least one clip near the base to prevent the plug from disconnecting.
  6. Peel the protective film and adjust the angle: Once everything is secure, remove the protective film from both sides of the acrylic panel. Tilt the base slightly if the light angle seems uneven—some bases have a small adjustment hinge. Step back and check that the backlight looks even across the artwork. If the light appears dim on one side, the panel may not be fully seated in the base slot. Remove and reinsert it carefully.
